CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

Samantha nearly wrecked the car half a dozen times on the way to the office. Each time a car came up behind her, she’d stare at the rearview mirror so intently she’d forget to watch the road and had to swerve to avoid an accident.

The guard stationed at the parking garage greeted her as she passed. Samantha pulled the car into a visitor’s spot, paranoid she’d been followed. Not once in the twenty plus years she’d lived in that apartment complex had Pablo ever asked for such specific information.

Why he picked today of all days, she couldn’t understand. Maybe the one who delivered her purse had threatened him or his family. But why?

She had been at an illegal club last night but if they suspected her involvement, why not send the authorities to arrest her? Why the games and secretiveness. Unless…

Samantha clutched her phone to call Darrien but tucked it away before she dialed. What if they were using her cell to trace calls?

Her office phone was an option, but that too could be traced.

She banged her head against the steering wheel and the horn blared. A female passerby startled. Samantha giggled then sighed. She was overreacting out of guilt for the human they had stashed away in the hotel. It was the only explanation. What she needed to do now was go upstairs to her office and work. Get her mind off things.

The whole situation with Ethan was driving her mad. He had to go. There was nothing she or Darrien could do for him. She would promise to speak with Evie on his behalf. Get a message to her to call him, if that would ease his concern, but she couldn’t risk keeping him here any longer. It was only a matter of time before someone found out. Humans had a distinct smell, though she had to admit, it was difficult to detect. Still, she wouldn’t risk her future or Darrien’s.

With a firm plan set, Samantha headed for her office, suitcase in hand. She needed to change; the dress she’d worn the night before had hints of dirt and dried—she looked closer—blood.

Her heart palpitated. From the fall, she reminded herself. A bump on the head would have caused some blood.

Lena was at her desk, typing away with a phone pressed to her ear. She glanced up and froze at the sight of Samantha. “I have to go.”

Samantha cringed. “Do I look that bad?” The dress was black; no way the stains were noticeable from afar.

“No, it’s just that I wasn’t expecting you today.” Lena tugged at the hem of her shirt.

“What do you mean?”

The woman shook her ebony hair. “You sent an email this morning that you would be out today.”

Samantha steadied herself. “I…changed my mind.” The last thing she wanted was to bring another party into the shit that seemed to be piling up around her.

Lena eyed the suitcase. “Going somewhere?”

“Staying with a friend. In the city. To be closer to the event.” The lie spilled out of her like acid.
